Happy New Year to you! I know 2016 was a rough year for many, and if that was the case for you, I’m sorry. I hope 2017 brings much joy and abundance to everyone.
Inspired by all the generosity that spread through the knitting community last year after the US election (#knitterspayitforward) and during the #getyouryarnwishesgranted game, I had the idea to start off the new year by bringing the Pay it Forward game to my fibre-y Instagram community. Some of you may have heard of this game from Facebook — the first five people to comment on your post would get a surprise from you sometime during the year and they were supposed to post the same on their Timeline. I tried for three years in a row to play on Facebook and it never worked the way it was intended. Almost everyone responded to receiving my gift with a surprised thank you, saying they had completely forgotten about the whole thing. Some others didn’t feel right about offering to pay it forward themselves until they had received their gift. I do enjoy giving gifts and surprises, but it definitely lost the fun and generous aspect of the Pay it Forward game that I had anticipated.
So…..here we go with CommuKnitty Pays it Forward 2017! I’ve posted this graphic on my Instagram profile, which you are welcome to use. You can come up with your own parameters for your “offer” and post your own graphic or repost this one.
The basic premise is to pay it forward in some way that trickles down and multiplies. I’m going to offer five people anywhere in the world a surprise gift at some point during the year. Since my Instagram feed is all about yarn, it will likely be fibre related like a knitted accessory, a skein of yarn, or a pattern from their wishlist. I’m including a survey I will ask my chosen people to fill out for me. Thank you to the Savvy Girls podcast for their very detailed swap survey, from which much of this was grabbed.
I encourage you to post on your profile with your own parameters. Here are mine:
- I will keep sign ups open until January 10th, 2017.
- Five (5) people will be chosen by random number generator*
- Open worldwide
- Please return the survey (as detailed as you like) within two weeks
*In order to be chosen, I must be able to see a post on your profile (does not have to use the same graphic) where you have offered something similar to a minimum of two people and invited them to pay it forward as well.
