Updates – Rhinebeck, Periscope/Podcasting, Rib magazine, Generosity Games & more!

December 16, 2016 by Ramona Leave a Comment

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here. I was wondering if I should bother to post this since Rhinebeck was now two months ago. I started this weeks ago and then got busy with some knitting related work for a friend. The best way to keep current with happenings all around me is through my Instagram feed. So I’ve decided to do quick updates on a bunch of things, that in the future will just be shorter posts. Rhinebeck Name Dropping &  Stash Enhancement Periscope notes will be at the end of the post for anyone wanting links to the things I purchased.

Quick updates since I last posted:

Knitting for Fort McMurray – thanks to the generosity of knitters in the Great Toronto area, we sent almost 300 hand knit items to Fort McMurray and many more were sent directly and continue to be sent. I have more items myself to get out there.

Podcast Guesting – I got to meet up with Melanie and her mom Karen from the Savvy Girls podcast when they were in Toronto for a family wedding. We did a little impromptu recording for their podcast and so I ended up being a guest on episode 169 (available through iTunes and other podcatchers).

Rib Magazine – One good thing about waiting so long to blog is that my friend Eric from the Sticks + Twine You Tube channel, along with Devon of the Handmade and Woolen You Tube channel have launched their magazine! The first issue has shipped out and I can’t wait to see it. You can order a copy via their website or inquire at your LYS. I’m really proud to have been a small part of this inaugural issue.

World of Threads Festival – I posted some photos over on Instagram of the incredible artwork from this festival. If you are in the GTA, it is well worth visiting.

Knitters Pay It Forward – This wonderful hashtag appeared on Instagram the morning after the US election. It was a tough time for many, and I was touched by the generosity and goodwill of so many in the fibre community. Check out the hashtag #knitterspayitforward if you want to see. On a personal level, I drew a random name from people who commented on my post and I will be knitting an accessory for a lovely knitter in Oregon. I have decided what to make, but it won’t get started until the end of the year or more likely the new year.

Get Your Yarn Wishes Granted – This was my first time participating in this game of generosity over on Instagram. People post their yarn wishes (though many wished for patterns, project bags, and other tools or notions) and someone would let you know if they could fulfill your wish. You are supposed to grant a wish before posting your own. What I found was that you had to be really fast to grant wishes, which is the fun part. Asking was harder for me and was a great exercise in receiving. You can check out the hashtag #getyouryarnwishesgranted if you want to see more.

Okay, back to the long overdue Rhinebeck notes…….

I did my first Periscope broadcast to show my Rhinebeck haul, knowing I wouldn’t be able to blog for awhile. For those of you who don’t know what Periscope is – it’s an app that does live video streaming. My username there is ramonafirehorse. I have set up my account so that it saves the videos. I didn’t know how to label the video, so it says Untitled, but the first one there is my Rhinebeck haul.  If you click the link above, it will take you to the video. I’ve tried it and I don’t believe you need an account to watch it. I did save the video to my phone but it is turned sideways, and doesn’t save the viewer comments, so much of it wouldn’t make sense without know what I am responding to. It’s about 30 minutes long so pop over if you’d like to see what I bought. I’m going to do the odd Periscope broadcast when I have things to show and I will add a blog post that will look like show notes. This post will be a combination of show notes and a regular blog post which includes photos.

Rhinebeck 2016 haul

I’m not going to talk a lot about what we did or what happened at Rhinebeck. You can watch the Periscope video for a lot of that, and if you have any questions just let me know. The Brooklyn Tweed Quarry and one of the MarshMallo Farm Jacob fibre are for gifts so they are not in my stash. The handmade ceramic button has also gone to a swap partner and unfortunately I send the card on as well, but I did show it on the Periscope. I also gifted the cones of blue Harrisville Designs yarn to a good friend who is making her first sweater. The leftovers will be gifted to another friend. Both of them suit this colour better than me so I’m happy to pay that forward. The CD is Sweeter in a Sweater by Melanie Gall of the SavvyGirls podcast and is a collection of World War II knitting songs. She does have a World War I collection as well.
