Knits for Fort Mac – Update

September 21, 2016 by Ramona Leave a Comment

donations

Behold just a small sampling of the knitted and crocheted winter items that will be sent out to the United Way in Fort McMurray at the end of the month. This post is to update people who have been making items with address of the United Way office that will be receiving our items, as well as a quick reminder of upcoming deadlines. I also have a wonderful alternative destination for those who would also like to donate gently used items.

To read the original blog post click here.

Reminder of the basic parameters:
– Newly made items only
– No mittens for children (they prefer to purchase waterproof mittens)
– Place item in a clean ziploc bag
– Fill out and include the donation tag, downloadable pdf file here

Ways to donate your items:
– If you are in the GTA, you can drop your items at Yarns Untangled in Kensington Market by Wednesday, September 28th.
– If you cannot make it during store hours, contact me through the Contact Me page on this blog, or through Ravelry or Instagram (username: ramonafirehorse) to make alternate arrangements.
– If you are north of Toronto in the Barrie area, you have a few days to contact Carolyn Macpherson of The Next Beautiful Thing You Tube podcast She will be bringing items to Toronto on Monday, September 26th.
– If you live outside the GTA and would like to send your items directly to Fort McMurray please send them to: United Way Fort McMurray
The Redpoll Centre at Shell Way
1 C. A. Knight Way
Fort McMurray, AB  T9H 5C5

Alternative way to donate new and gently used items:
Please check out Melissa of PrairieDyeStudio on Etsy. She took up the call and contacted other distribution centres. All the information is in her Instagram feed if you scroll through to the posts marked Knitting for Fort McMurray. I will try to sum up the info she posted here so everything can be found in one place.

Northlife Fellowship Baptist Church
Attn: Rachel Ondang
141 Alberta Dr.
Fort McMurray, AB  T9H 1R2
– will accept all knitted items
– will accept gently used knitted goods that are washed
– there is also a great need for winter jackets, snow pants, toques, mittens (some insulated ones as well), gently used winter boots for all ages and bed linens. All can be new or used as long as they are in good condition and washed.

Mennonite communities across Alberta and Canada have been shipping items bulk through Greyhound via bales and the prices rae more reasonable than Canada Post. If you have a large quantity to ship and need a phone number for shipping, contact Melissa and she will provide it to you.

Melissa is doing a giveaway for a $100 gift certificate to her Etsy shop to encourage as many donations as possible. See her Instagram feed for details.

I want to thank everyone for their support. I hope this update gives you options for donating, even beyond our original parameters. The United Way will be sharing photos with us after items have been donated so I will be sure to share those as well.
